I read a wonderful book recently. It was entitled: The Wisdom of the Native Americans. I have always admired the Native American ideals that I read about as a child. As an adult, this book taught me how sophisticated their thinking was. The questions that they asked of those seeking to “convert them” to a religion that was anything but kind were pretty amusing. Among the things that are said in this book:
We are not interested in learning about religion. Religions cause people to fight over God like the Protestants and Catholics do. We Indians do not fight over God. We know that He is.
Upon being taken to a museum in Washington D.C., a famous chief remarked, “I do not understand the white man at all. He cuts down trees, blocks rivers and tears up the land..then he paints a picture of what was and wants IT to be admired.”
Paraphrasing another comment, a chief remarked, “We used to kill liars because if someone would purposefully mislead those around him/her, then they could not be relied upon. According to him, there was no theft, murder, rape and other crimes among the tribes, because the punishment was swift, sure and just. He also believed that the way that children were raised to respect everyone around them and to be polite from their earliest years was why they never became criminals.
The societies based upon white European materialism have created a most unhappy world. They have focused on materialism and lost their souls in the process.
We need to begin again and build a world in which everyone has a place. People will be part of a greater whole and adjudged for their contributions to that rather than what they have tricked or stolen from others. Right now, the worst elements in society (banksters) have the most prestige…and that is just plain wrong.
